Eat up darling is a short artist’s film that combines animation, photographic slides, and dramatic sound to create an expressive collage of impressions and impulses associated with states of bodily ecstasy and excess.
References to the pregnant body such as the rounded belly and the umbilical cord merge with loaded images of greedy consumption (of spaghetti) and slides of text with words such as ‘sausage’, ‘pumpkin’, ‘honey’ that are commonly used as terms of endearment by adults for their children.
Seemingly innocent expressions of affection and contemplation are thus shown as entrenched in darker emotional states, revealing underlying aggressive desires to consume, possess, and internalise those we love and fear to lose.
