Sweetie emerged out of a body of work that explores terms of endearment commonly used by adults for their children and also by lovers for their loved ones, such as: ‘honey’, ‘sweetie pie’, ‘pumpkin’, ‘sausage’. These seemingly innocent expressions of love often come together with references to delicious foods, thus revealing underlying aggressive desires to consume, possess, and internalise those we love and fear to lose.

 

In Sweetie, the ‘sweetness’ is pink, flowing, and seductive, but also staged and broken, exposing jagged edges, and traces of something else - something too sugary, leaving a bitter lingering aftertaste.
